Gotta admit that I had this album back in the 1970’s, and also, this was one of my favorite tunes. I love chickens and have always loved this goofy song. I watched this video at work and just about fell out of my chair laughing when they all started clucking. I was 15, loved OMD, and got a kick out of the adults freaking out on long-haired, hippie, musicians moving into the farming community. I lived about 3 1/2 miles from the old farm house that OMD rented when they cut this album. Kids this is the music to grow up with.
When disco came out in the 70s, I left rock. Took acid once & played this song over & over & over & over, lol. Trippin brain, runnin all day, can’t get on, can’t get off, trippin brain, take my thoughts away…

What’s not to love – chickens, trains and lasers – classic combination ! This is cool music kids!!!!! Iโve just come across this in 2023 and I wish I could go back to that time. Still have the album to this day and it never fails to put me in a happy place when I hear it
That context helps explain why the song uses barnyard language next to science-fiction imagery. Paraphrased, the song keeps returning to an image of nonstop movement and a person locked outside or inside that movement. The singer cannot control either one. The song sounds playful, but the words hint at being stuck in motion. Instead, it turns odd images into a mood. ยฉ might belong to the performers or owners of the songs.

The rhythm feels chugging, which fits the train image, while the vocal delivery stays lively and untroubled. The Ozark Mountain Daredevils were never a fully straight-faced country band, and they were never just pranksters either. Those two ideas living together reflect an early 1970s American rock style where country tradition met counterculture experimentation. The band came from Missouri and often blended rural imagery with psychedelic looseness.

Then it adds another image, laser beam in a dream, and suddenly the song feels half-rural joke, half-surreal daydream. Free song lyrics from Ozark Mountain Dare, for example A Dollar’s Worth Of Regular, Arroyo & Backroads. One of my favorite Southern Rock bands of the 70s . OMD crowds were usually pretty rowdy groups and they were having no part of some folk singer. They had a folk singer named Joan Armatrading open up for them. Thank you to whoever posted the video!!! We saw them play this last night at the family arena in St Charles MO.
I have only seen and heard it with these men in this song. These men’s music was light-hearted and FUN. Good to hear you have your father’s album as well๐ถ๐ต The band was good friends with the owners of the cafe where I worked.
They let the image roll by and trust the listener to enjoy the ride. The band does not force one fixed answer. It turns a nonsense image into a song about motion, disconnection, and cheerful bewilderment.
The lyrics employ surreal imagery and repetitive phrases to convey a dreamlike, almost absurd quality to the song, effectively capturing the emotional and psychological toll of being stuck in an unfulfilling routine. The use of chickens in the train metaphor adds a layer of absurdity to the lyrics, highlighting the absurdity of the situation, where even chickens are caught up in this never-ending journey. Factually, it works as a comic, eccentric album cut from a band known for mixing wit and craft.
Why ‘Chicken Train’ Feels So Strange and Fun
These guys never got the recognition they deserved. I later bought the vinyl album and I can honestly tell you that this was one rare album that I loved every song on it! My Dad used to sing this all the time. They both loved their music!! My Dad’s favorite song, he’d play the Hermonica to it, just lost my Dad this month.
Chicken trainThis song is about a train that transports chickens Overall, Chicken Train is a unique and interesting song that uses surreal imagery to express feelings of confinement and powerlessness. It cuts through the darkness of the dream world, but the singer is still unable to fully grasp it. The laser beam is another symbol of something that feels both powerful and elusive. The repeated lines “I can’t get on, I can’t get off” reinforce the idea of being stuck in a situation that feels endless and frustrating.
It is short, catchy, and built around a ridiculous central image. The performance has the loose, rootsy feel that defines much of the bandโs early work. Maybe the singer is caught in a bizarre thought loop where simple things become huge and uncontrollable. That gives the earlier train image a new meaning. When the lyric shifts to a dream image, the song opens up. A laser beam feels modern, strange, and dreamlike.
